Interacting with senior military leadership and visiting the maintainers, operators, and trainers responsible for two legs of the nuclear deterrent creates a vitally important relationship, one that can close that technical gap and ensure future civilian leaders are able to make informed decisions.
About the Author
Merit Schumaker is a new Federal Program Manager (FPM) in Defense Programs (DP) for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Before becoming an NNSA FPM, he participated in the year-long NNSA’s National Graduate Fellowship Program in the same office DP hired him. Merit first encountered the history of the nation’s nuclear security while growing up in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where his parents exposed him to the historical Manhattan Project and its involvement with the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). He later worked at LANL for the summers of 2011 and 2012 in the Packaging and Transportation Division. Merit possesses a Bachelor and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI.
