Please join the Project on Nuclear Issues for our Deterrence 101 Watch Parties. Deterrence 101 is a collection of three thirty-minute long videos that explore core deterrence theory. Each screening will show one module from the series and feature a discussion with leading experts in the field.

Register in advance below. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.


Module 1 Screening – January 20th, 2022

4:30 – 6:00 PM EST

Module 1 covers the evolution of deterrence theory, seminal texts, and academic debates from 1940 to present. This screening will feature a discussion with Justin Anderson from the National Defense University and Mark Donaldson from CSIS.

Module 2 Screening – February 10th, 2022

4:30 PM – 6:00 PM EST

Module 2 analyzes the ways that nuclear-armed states messaged and strategized the possession of nuclear arsenals. Vipin Narang from MIT and Heather Williams from the Belfer Center’s Managing the Atom will join to discuss.

Module 3 Screening – March 3, 2022

4:30 PM – 6:00 PM EST

Module 3 looks at how new military conflicts and capabilities have historically challenged deterrence. Jayne Vaynman from Temple University will lead the discussion.
