This year marks the 10th anniversary of the UK Project On Nuclear Issues (UK PONI), over which time its Annual Conference has become the premier national forum for emerging scholars and professionals to consider salient issues in nuclear policy, to share their work, and to connect with peers and established experts.
9 June 1300-1800: Emerging Technology and Nuclear Proliferation
10 June 1300-1800: Challenges and Solutions for Sustaining Nuclear Expertise in the Next Generation
11 June 1300-1830: UK Nuclear Weapons and Euro-Atlantic Security
This year’s Annual Conference will be held completely online, over three afternoons. During these sessions, they will hear from emerging nuclear experts, UK PONI alumni and senior keynote speakers, and will have the opportunity to participate in a nuclear policy-making exercise run in collaboration with Chatham House.

On the first day of the conference, emerging experts will discuss developments in artificial intelligence, cyber and space technologies, hypersonic missiles and missile defence, and open source intelligence as they relate to nuclear proliferation and strategic stability. On the second day, our speakers will review the UK’s nuclear skills pipeline by reviewing UK attitudes to nuclear issues, the current state of the UK’s early career cohort, and some lessons from the past; we will also hear from UK PONI alumni and former Directors. The last day of the conference will focus on nuclear weapons, nuclear power and UK national strategy, and on the challenges of making policy on nuclear issues.

UK PONI is pleased to announce that the closing keynote will be given by Angus Lapsley, Director General Strategy and International, UK Ministry of Defence. Further keynote speakers will be announced in the coming weeks.
