Established by Lawrence Livermore National Security and given in recognition of outstanding service to the nation, the John S. Foster Medal commemorates the career of former director of LLNL, John S. Foster Jr., and recognizes exceptional leadership in advancing security and stability through work on nuclear weapons issues. In addition to playing a pivotal role in reducing global nuclear tensions through START I and START II negotiations, Amb. Brooks served in the U.S. Navy, as director of Defense Programs and Arms Control at the National Security Council, and as administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration.

PONI is honored to work closely with Amb. Brooks in his capacity as co-Chair of the Nuclear Scholars Initiative, where he continues to provide instrumental feedback on research and mentorship to the next generation of leaders across the nuclear enterprise. We look forward to continuing to work with Amb. Brooks in the future.
